Lockwood Cemetery, Lockwood, NY

Lockwood, New York is a small town located in Western New York near the Pennsylvania border. It is a part of Barton Township in Tioga County and was previously known as Bingham's Mills until 1881 when the name changed due to "political differences" to Lockwood (1).

Lockwood Cemetery is near the Lockwood Methodist Church on Church Street. Some remember there was a playground next to the church, but it now has several homes. Once you go over the little bridge, there is a small street sign that says "Lockwood Cemetery" that you would miss if you weren't looking right at it. You then drive up a very small and bumpy dirt road to the top of the hill where the cemetery lies. It is a small, neatly taken care of cemetery and there is a house located there that is possibly the caretaker's house.

This cemetery is special for several reasons. Even though it is so small, it actually lies in two counties: Tioga County and Chemung County. It is also special because it houses my husband's ancestors! It is a pleasant cemetery to walk through as there doesn't seem to be much traffic and it is quiet. I took my little assistants with me as my son has fun playing "detective" to find the requested gravestones. In this case, we were looking for ancestors so it was even more exciting! My daughter spent most of the time trying to distract me with "Mommy! Look at this one!! Take a picture!!"
